1930s Acrostic “Dearest” Filigree and Czech Crystal Brooch

$ 135.00

This dainty 1930s costume brooch with intricate filigree, a variegated crystal center stone and dangling bezel set Czech crystals holds a secret, making it a great gift for anyone who loves a good puzzle. Each dangling crystal represents a gem; diamond, emerald, amethyst, ruby, emerald, sapphire, and topaz. If you take the first letter of the name of each gem you create an acrostic spelling out “DEAREST.” Acrostic jewelry dates back to the 18th century and was a favorite of Napoleon Bonaparte, among others, who would often give acrostic jewelry to his family members as gifts commemorating special dates. Acrostic pieces were also often used to express a personal sentiment between two people, so expressions such as “adore”, “regard”, and “dearest”, like this little lovely, were fairly popular.
