Circa 1860 Early Victorian Cowrie Shell Green and Yellow Gold-Filled Flower Brooch

$ 275.00

This darling little brooch dating from around 1860 beautifully balances elements from both the land and sea. The center flower and bud are made of glossy cowrie shells decorated with sparkling paste stones. The leafy stem is green and yellow gold filled metal. Shells were hugely popular decorations on household trinkets and jewelry in the Victorian era. Women would create entire seashell bouquets featuring everything from delicate cowrie shell blossoms, like the one we have here, to huge flowers and leaves made from pieces of conch shells and cockles. This little sprig is a sweet (and much more travel friendly) reminder of the art form that delighted our ancestors.
