Late Victorian Hand Wired Cowrie Shell Necklace

$ 345.00

The Victorians were very interested in the natural world and that is often reflected in the fashion.  This sweet summery hand wired cowrie shell necklace was likely created circa 1900, when shells had already long been established as a popular adornment for jewelry and household ornaments such as mirrors and boxes. This piece may have been purchased as a souvenir or crafted by a Victorian socialite, as shell art had become a fashionable hobby for high class ladies and conchology, the study of shells, was also seen as a suitable pastime. This unconventional chain of cowries with a dangling graduated design really embodies the elegant charm of the Victorian age.
