Rare Italian Pietra Dura Goldstone and Lapis Lazuli Sterling Silver Bracelet

$ 1,650.00

There's an abundance of intricate handwork and detail in this bracelet; it's sure to elicit admiring double-takes! Serpentine sterling silver links alternate with bezel set goldstone (which is a type of glass) and lapis lazuli pietra dura ovals. Pietra dura is a decorative stone inlay technique originating in Italy that involves precisely cutting stones to fit together seamlessly in a design. In this piece, goldstone ovals are inset into lapis lazuli chevrons. The bold geometric pattern provides a great contrast to the curvy, hand patterned figure eight links and the twisted wire frames in which the pietra dura are set. The bracelet is constructed with a double chain on which the links are threaded and closes with a fold over clasp. This rare Italian piece dates to the early 20th century, towards the end of the Arts and Crafts period.

Condition

Good vintage condition. The pietra dura has some scratching throughout and one small chip. There is one goldstone slice which is lighter, but original to the piece.  Due to its age and the rarity of this piece, we consider the wear minor to the overall effect of this bracelet.

Hallmarks

Stamped sterling on back of clasp, as well as on a plaque on adjoining link.
