Sentimentality never goes out of style and this Victorian tricolored book chain and locket is no exception. Characterized by their flat interlocking links, book chains were a prominent trend in Victorian era jewelry. This gold filled necklace, circa 1870, features geometric patterned links in rose and green gold that alternate with yellow gold links stamped with a sunburst pattern. The reverse of the chain boasts a clean and simple pattern in yellow gold. This might be the ultimate reversible necklace: wear it on either the tricolor side or the yellow gold side to suit your mood! The necklace has a barrel clasp front and center, from which hangs a wonderful hand engraved locket. One side of the locket depicts a charming village scene surrounded by a floral design, while the opposite side is hand engraved with the initials “GWH.” Just like its chain, both sides of this locket deserve to be shown off! Given its intricate details and engravings, this item was surely treasured in its time.
Condition
Good vintage condition. There are visible little dents on the barrel clasp. The bezels are no longer inside the locket, as a result you can see the original lead solder that was used to construct the piece on the inside of the locket. Once you put your photos in, this will of course no longer be visible. The piece appears to have been previously acid tested on one link on the yellow gold side of the necklace near the barrel clasp; you can see the scratch marks only with close examination. See photos. None of these flaws are easily apparent when worn, and we think this enchanting necklace is in tremendous shape for its 140+ years.
Measurements
The necklace measures approximately 18” in length and 1/4” wide 1/8" thick. The locket is roughly 1” tall (not including the jump ring) by 7/8” wide.
