Circa 1870 Victorian Sterling Silver and Velvet Choker

$ 425.00

This late Victorian choker, with its sterling silver pendant, dangling tassels, festooning chain and rust colored silk velvet ribbon, feels very regal when worn. And that’s how many Victorian women must have felt when they wore chokers, considering the look was hugely popular and not just among the elite. This particular style, the velvet ribbon with an ornate center pendant, was particularly trendy because of its accessibility. If a woman could not afford something like this beauty, they could always buy a velvet ribbon and attach a brooch or buckle pendant. This choker is an enchanting example of the sought after fashion of the time. It is beautifully engraved with the initials W.F.B on the back of the pendant, so it was probably a personalized gift selected with the height of fashion in mind.
