This sterling silver Art Nouveau brooch captures the graceful flight of a dragonfly with the help of authentic butterfly wings under bezel set glass. English metalsmith Thomas L Mott became famous for his butterfly wing jewelry in the early 20th century, often augmenting the natural beauty of the Blue Morpho butterfly wing with painted landscapes or incorporating them into designs shaped like winged insects. This brooch, which dates to the late 1910s or 1920s, is a fabulous example of Thomas L Mott's detailed silver work and clever incorporation of the butterfly wing.

 

Condition

Very Good vintage condition.  There is a small nick to the glass on the inner end of the right wing visible in the second photo, but it is difficult to detect with the naked eye, and does not detract from the piece in any way.

Hallmarked TLM, sterling, and England. 

 

Measurements

This piece measures 1 7/8" in length and 1 6/8" at its widest point across.  Weighs 4.8 grams.
